What Is Your Curiosity Quotient [Huffington Post]

Written by Cari E. Guittard, Professor of Global Management, Corporate Diplomacy, and Womens Leadership at Hult International Business School, for the Huffington Post What is your curiosity quotient? When I engage my Hult business students on elements of strategic influence, I first ask them to think about those in their life who have deeply influenced them and why. When I look at my own list there is a common thread that runs through each of these individuals irrespective of age, gender, or cultural background those who have deeply influenced me over the course of my lifetime have high curiosity quotients. Their minds are ever hungry and they are always learning, seeking and sharing new knowledge. Perhaps this is because I myself have nurtured an insatiable curiosity from a young age. One of my nicknames growing up was data and I wore the name proudly, absorbing weird and unusual facts, figures and insights about a seemingly endless array of topics. This hunger to acquire new knowledge continues to this day. The more I learn the more I realize there is so much more to learn, so much I dont know about so many things. Working globally throughout my career, Ive come to deeply val ue this quality in others and believe a high curiosity quotient (CQ) is an essential global management and leadership quality. CQ as The Ultimate Tool for Global Business In business traditionally there has been a disproportionate focus on IQ, intellectual quotients and to a lesser extent EQ, emotional quotients. Recent research however is emerging that is demonstrating the importance of CQ and Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a leading authority in personality profiling and psychometric testing, penned a brilliant blog piece this week in the Harvard Business Review detailing the merits of a hungry mind. When it comes to managing complexity, Dr. Chamorro-Prezumic argues that CQ is just as important when managing complexity in two major ways: increased tolerance for ambiguity and a higher investment over time in knowledge and expertise acquisition which leads to a nuanced, sophisticated way of thinking over time. CQ is the ultimate tool, he argues, to produce simple solutions for complex problems. And as Thomas Friedman noted in his article from last year Its the P.Q. and C. Q as much as I.Q, the skill required for every decent job is rising as is the nece ssity of lifelong learning those with more P.Q. (passion quotient) and C.Q. (curiosity quotient) to leverage all the new digital tools to not just find a job, but to invent one or reinvent one, and to not just learn but to relearn for a lifetime. Most importantly Dr. Chamarro-Premuzic drives home the point that while IQ is difficult to coach, EQ and CQ can be developed. We should all seek to increase and nurture our CQ as well as celebrate those teachers, coaches, mentors and executives who inspire this development in others. The Importance of Immunization in Nigeria - 2171 Words

Immunization is one of the most successful, cost-effective public health prevention strategies averting an estimated 2-3 million global deaths annually (UNICEF 2013). Although immunization is safe and easily accessible, global under-five mortality due to vaccine-preventable diseases remains unacceptably high. It has been shown that children who receive all appropriate vaccinations by 9 months of age are less likely to die than those who do not. (Rutherford et al. 2009). Vaccine-preventable deaths account for 29% of deaths worldwide in children under five, and in 2011, 1.5 million children died from vaccine-preventable diseases. (UNICEF 2013). In Nigeria, vaccine-preventable deaths account for 22% of deaths in children, or 200,000 deaths per year (USAID 2009). Immunization has led to the eradication of small-pox and also to the elimination of polio in most countries, with polio being endemic in Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan (UNICEF 2013). The contributions made by immunizations are crucial to achieving MDG 4 (reduction of under-five mortality by two-thirds in 2015). Faith groups and institutions should not be allowed to form political parties and they should not attempt to gain influence in the workings of government for their views and values by entering the realm of political discourse and attempting to elect their own politicians. Throughout our history there has been an ongoing argument between religion and government. Should religion play a part in the government, schools and other social compasses or should it be separated? In America there are approximately 67 million Roman Catholics; 16 million Protestants; five million Mormons; and five million and a quarter non-Christians (Clausen, 2007). This is a small indication of the differences that America inspires. It shows some of the different religions in our country and that religion shouldn’t be pushed on others. There isn’t a way for the government and faith gro ups to be intertwined in a way that will respect the abundance of religions in America. The only way I see to accomplish that is to separate it as we have been doing. Our society cannot respect all religions if there is only one that the government follows and includes within their decisions. The separation is a statement that religions are equal in the eyes of our countries leaders and our government. It is claimed that religion possess equal validity. As stated by Bellah â€Å"if the primary contribution of religion to society is through the character and conduct of citizens, any religion, large or small, familiar or strange, can be of equal value to one another (Clausen, 2007). Oliver Twist Persuasive Essay Example For Students

Oliver Twist Persuasive Essay The boys of the workhouse were not fed a healthy amount of nutritious food; instead they were forced to eat leftovers which went by the name Gruel. One boy was afraid that he would eat the boy who slept next to him as he was not friendly with the idea of small amounts of rubbish every day. Dickens uses Hyperbole to create sympathy for the boys, they are young boys who need nutrition to grow up, but yet they are being served gruel! Nobody was allowed to ask for more food in the workhouse. Asking for more was considered a crime, one that was worse than being poor. Again, Dickens uses pathos, but this time he uses it to describe how Oliver was treated after making a brave request for more food. That boy will be hung! was mentioned soon after his request was confirmed. It makes us feel sympathy towards Oliver because we know that he will be punished for naturally wanting more food! Irony is used to partly show sympathy for Oliver and outline the type of person who has been looking after him in the workhouse. You feel as a mother, Mrs. Mann. The womans name is Mrs Mann, and yet she behaves just as she would towards children if she was male. Her attitudes and behaviour towards Oliver and the rest of the children of the workhouse do not reflect, nor are they similar to, those of a real mother. This shows sympathy because it tells us that he will not be treated as if he had a loving mother, but instead he will be taken care of by someone who couldnt care less about his condition. Additional sympathy is displayed for young Oliver at a point after his birth; his mother was about to die, while he was fighting for his life, and yet the surgeon still has time to stare at fire. The surgeon had been sitting with his face turned towards the fire: giving the palms of his hands a warm rub alternately The surgeon is sitting with his face turned away from Oliver, not worrying what could happen while his head is turned or how Olivers mother is coping. He has more important things to do, like rub his palms together in a critical moment. Sympathy is shown towards Oliver in this section of the novel because he and his mother were both neglected in their time of need. Dickens mainly creates sympathy for Oliver twist by using hyperbole and pathos, along with describing how he was treated in the workhouse. Dickens wanted to change the view on poor people and I think he may have been successful because a lot of people now understand how it feels to be poor although being poor was not his fault.
